Health Benefits
Olives, one of the oldest foods known, are thought to have originated in Crete or Syria between five and seven thousand years ago. Since ancient times, the olive tree has provided food, fuel, timber and medicine for many civilizations, and has been regarded as a symbol of peace and wisdom. The venerable oil of the olive has been consumed since as early as 3,000 B.C.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil is derived from the first pressing of the olives, has a free acidity level of less than 0.8% and this together with being cold pressed is believed to give the strongest health benefits. Olio di Piatello always has less than 0.2% free acidity.
Well-documented by numerous studies around the world, the many health benefits of olive oil make it one of the most indispensable ingredients of a healthy diet.
The beneficial health effects of olive oil are due both to its high content of mono unsaturated fatty acids and its high content of anti oxidative substances.
Studies have shown that olive oil offers protections against heart disease by controlling LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels while raising HDL (“good cholesterol”) levels. No other naturally produced oil has as large an amount of monounsaturated as olive oil - mainly oleic acid. A good quality extra virgin olive oil is full of antiioxidants which can lower your risk of cancer.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil contains high levels of oleocanthal and other anti-inflammatory substances which can positively impact illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, arthritis and asthma. It also provides valuable amounts of the antioxidants beta-carotene and vitamin E, as well as squalene, a much less common antioxidant that also plays a special role in skin health.
These anti-inflammatory benefits of extra virgin olive oil do not depend on large levels of intake. As little as 1-2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil per day have been shown to be associated with significant anti-inflammatory benefits.
I have a very early limited press of my Single Estate Organic Olive Oil .
The amount of oil obtained from these young olives is greatly reduced when picked so early but I am interested in obtaining the best health properties. At first taste this oil is slightly more bitter than later presses but this is softened when used with salt or garlic. The flavour is then wonderful.
